The Camera That Sold Five Million Dreams.

There are cameras that are good. There are cameras that are great. And then there is the Canon AE-1, the camera that between 1976 and 1986 sold over five million units and redefined what a film SLR could be. It was the first camera of its kind to be centrally controlled by a microcomputer, reducing its parts count by 300 and making it affordable without making it feel cheap. It appeared in Hollywood films, in the hands of celebrities, on the shoulders of a generation discovering photography for the first time. The 50mm f/1.8 S.C. paired with it is no afterthought — the S.C. version renders with a warmth and character that the later S.S.C. simply does not replicate. This is not nostalgia. This is canon in every sense of the word.
